August Notes from the District Governor

District Governor Bill WomackMy Fellow Lions,

It is hard to believe that my first month as District Governor is almost come and gone. There have been so many things going on that it is difficult at times  to keep everything in prospective. I have been to meetings for the district, visiting clubs, teaching in leadership classes, helping those that are less fortunate and still having the time of my life.

Anyway, here is what is going on in District 31-D.

Our Humanitarian-White Cane Workshop was help on Saturday, July 24th at the W-S Konnoak Hills Lions Club with a total of 100 Lions in attendance. PDG Marvin Doub welcomed everyone before turning the meeting over to District White Cane Chair Ted Womack. Lion Ted gave a brief summary of last years contributions for our district and told all in attendance we had a good year, but we could do better. We missed our district goal by less than $6,000 and that 37 of the 39 clubs in our district met their district goal or made some sort of contribution to White Cane. We are very appreciative of the clubs that participated this year and I know Camp Dogwood will benefit dearly from this, but we as a district short changed our VIP’s by not meeting our goal. There were several clubs who turned in their White Cane contributions totaling more than $5,000. This was an excellent way to “KICK-OFF” the White Cane campaign and begin the new Lions year on a positive note. Let’s all strive to focus on the needs this money provides and step up and do our part.

We also heard from our NCLF President, Herb Justice whose theme this year is “Service from the Heart”. If we can feel the need, feel the enjoyment we get when we are helping others, we can surely say we are giving from the heart. We also received some detailed information from our Executive Director Steve Walker of the North Carolina Lions Foundation; State Camp Dogwood Chair, PDG Mike Flora and State H/WC Director Carlton Metts who by some unknown way introduced his five day old grandson to the group. He and Anne are proud grandparents and that was easy to see from the pictures on the screen. Congratulations, from all of us in District 31-D.

We also had our annual Leadership Training for all Presidents and Vice Presidents, led by PDG Paul Bledsoe. PDG John Wall taught the leadership class for the Secretaries and Treasurers and PDG David Osborne led the class for all District Chairs. DG Bill Womack did the training for his Zone Chairs and a New Member Orientation class was taught by PDG Johnny Stuart. We were told that everyone had good attendance and the training was a success. I would like to say a special “thank you” to those who participated in and led our Leadership Training this year, and also to the Winston-Salem Konnoak Hills Lions Club for the delicious food and for hosting this workshop for our district.

Zone and District Chairs

To be courteous to everyone, please remember to give all reports from the podium so everyone can hear what is being said. Also, you must e-mail your report prior to the meeting to Cabinet Secretary John Wall or give him a copy after your report is given.

NCLF Foundation Board Meeting

The first NCLF Board Meeting will be held at the N. Raleigh Hilton Hotel in Raleigh, August 6-8, with a Past Presidents Dinner on Friday night and a NCLF Banquet on Saturday night.

2010-2011 Budget

The Budget and Finance committee met on Thursday, June 22nd to put together the budget for this Lions year. PDG “Doc” Shaver, Budget and Finance District Chair, 1VDG Mike Hopkins, Cabinet Sec/Treas. John Wall and I discussed all of this information over a plate of fried chicken, chicken livers and thick burgers. It would have taken longer but the restaurant ran out of banana pudding, sorry “Doc”. This budget was presented at the August 1st Cabinet meeting and approved.

Our first Cabinet meeting for the new Lions year was held on Sunday August 1st at the Springfield Baptist Church in High Point, at 2:30 p.m. We had approximately 55 Lions attending, covered several issues, two of which I would like to mention. We approved and voted on the resolution for the merger of the High Point Host and Oakview Lions Clubs. Secondly, we approved the change of month and location of our Mid-Winter Convention. Our January convention is still scheduled for 2011, but our next convention will be in the fall, September 2011. This will be explained more in detail in the copy of the minutes from the Cabinet meeting.

History Book for District 31-D

The Council of Governors for this Lions year along with the District and State History chairs have made a commitment to have published and be available at the State Convention a history book for District 31-D. The following information will give you a little more detail of what to expect.

1. The book size will be a hardbound collector’s edition, 9 x 12 inches, 70# matte or enamel paper, unlimited photos with a mix of text on 208 pages. There will be linen binding in turquoise, 150 pt. binder’s boards, round and back head and footbands to match, embossed (raised) 3D seal of the Lions logo on front with gold foil stamping on lid and spine.
2. The publisher will be Walsworth Publishing Company. They are a yearbook company with a no-risk prepublication guarantee. There will be pre-orders with the money being held by the NCLF. It is better to reprint instead of over-print.
3. This edition will cover the Lions years 1988-2011.
4. The book will retail for $25 through pre-orders and will be available to be picked up at the State Convention.
5. Each club history will include a written history and include one photograph selected by the club. All Past District Governors and Past Foundation Presidents will be represented with their clubs through a footnote and a thumbnail photo.
6. Each club is allotted a 300-word history section and 1 photograph. Additional words are allowed at the cost of 10 cents each and any additional photos can be included at the cost of ten dollars each.
7. Tribute pages can include text and photos and are available at the following prices: Full page-$200 and _ page $125

We have a tentative plan to do the book in several sections.

1. Recap of the first 3 books from the forming of the NC State Association for the Blind in 1934 to 1988.
2. Folklore of the Lions.
3. Important People and Places in NC. This would include Jack Stickley, William L. Woolard, Sid Scruggs, VIP Fishing Tournament, Clinical Eye Research projects and Camp Dogwood for example.
4. The North Carolina Lions Foundation
5. Alphabetical Club Listing (this will be the last thing sent to the publisher).
